A Record- Breaking 50 Pets Adopted ! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!!!
EVENT BACKGROUND INFORMATION Catherine Brown Stillman Day at the Brownsville Animal Shelter was part of the Largest Pet Adoption Event in the World as we participated in the North Shore Animal League's Pet Adoptathon® 2009! Please Click on the image above to visit the North Shore Animal League event Web Site! The North Shore Animal League explains: Pet Adoptathon® is the world's largest pet adoption event, with more than 700 hundred dogs, cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption in our Port Washington, NY shelter, and over 2,000 shelters participating in 26 countries worldwide. This year, North Shore Animal League America is proud to have renowned dog expert, Cesar Millan as the Pet Adoptathon® 2009 spokesperson! In 1995, Pet Adoptathon began simply as a North Shore Animal League America adoption weekend, with the goal of finding homes for each dog and cat in the shelter. The first weekend in May was set aside and plans were made to stay open 36 hours straight. Local media was called and special fun activities were held under the big tent-all to call attention to the many dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at the Animal League. And it worked! That weekend, over 500 needy pets were placed in excellent adoptive homes. It became apparent that the overwhelming success had to be shared. Soon the Animal League extended invitations to shelters everywhere to participate in Pet Adoptathon '96. That year, over 700 animal organizations joined together; the result was thousands more loving adoptions. And every year since, Pet Adoptathon has continued to grow. Last year, over 2,000 organizations participated all across the United States and around the globe. Since 1995, Pet Adoptathon has helped over a quarter of a million dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens around the world find new, loving homes. © 2009 North Shore Animal League America Catherine Brown Stillman Day 2009 Was Held On Saturday May 2nd 11 AM - 5 PM and Sunday May 3rd, NOON to 5 PM The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center was the site of a weekend long event celebrating the life and animal-centered work of Ms. Catherine Stillman. The Stillman family was a founding family of Brownsville and have been key in many activities to promote and advance the City. Catherine Stillman recently passed away, leaving a big void and marking a tremendous loss for those who knew her--and countless more who benefited from her kindness without ever knowing how her actions touched them. For those who were not fortunate enough to know Ms. Stillman, we wish to share with you her love for animals and her efforts to promote animal welfare and care in Brownsville. It was through her generous donation that we were able to have the low cost spay/neuter clinic that now bears here name: The Catherine Brown Stillman Animal Clinic. She was a strong proponent of "no-kill" animal shelters and always led the cause to one day reach that goal in our city as well. At the event, the now opened Dog Park will was named in her honor as well. Indeed, we would be remiss if we limited our dedication to two days only. In fact, henceforth, the First Saturday of May each year will be known in Brownsville as "Catherine Brown Stillman Day", forever celebrating her legacy and honoring her efforts as others continue down the path she made. We met in the Catherine Brown Stillman Dog Park, just next to the clinic at the Brownsville Animal Shelter at 416 FM 511. The event started Saturday at 11 AM with the Honorable Pat Ahumada, Mayor of Brownsville officially opening the event and announcing several proclamations to formally rename the facilities to Ms. Stillman as well as several other proclamations which recognized individuals who followed in the spirit of Ms. Catherine Brown Stillman in their humane animal endeavors. There was food, a bounce house for the kids and events for adults and children of all ages! An educational tour of the Catherine Brown Stillman Animal Clinic was provided, with an opportunity to meet veterinarian Dr. Sherri Wooding, clinic staff and also tour the Animal Shelter. Shelter management and staff were on hand and all were given the opportunity to meet the many dogs and cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption into their forever loving home! Shelter management hoped to find adoptive home for 40 or more pets during those two days, but when all were counted, 50 pets were in new, loving homes, making a two day new adoption record! As a special event sponsorship, Brownsville PAWS provided funding to reduce adoption fees at the shelter event for Saturday, May 2nd and Sunday, May 3rd 2009 to only $50.
